Who were the Photographers?

We intended/hoped that we could identify the photographer who took each photo used at this website and give credit where it was due, and for a while we did try to do just that. However, so many years after the fact, it became painfully obvious to us that the task of correctly identifying the photographer for each of the photos displayed at this website was impossible.

Below is a list (in somewhat of a chronological order by photo dates) of some of the many photographers we wish to thank, even if we don't know for certain which photos they took.

Our sincere thanks go to Patt Buell for hundreds of hours of dedication to the scanning and restoring of the old photographs which are presented here.

The black and white photographs presented here were scanned from old issues of the Exhaust Notes.  We apologize for their less than perfect clarity.  Printing processes in the past required that the photos be prepared for printing by having a dot pattern overlaid on them.  The best new technology scanners and photo restoration programs cannot completely remove this imperfection.

All efforts have been made to remove the staples from the foreheads of those (un)fortunate enough to have had their photos printed in the center page in the Exhaust Notes.  Fold marks have been "air brushed" out when possible.  When an original black and white photo was available, or a color version of the same photo was available, we have, in all cases, used the better photo.

The photos presented here have been optimized for presentation on the Internet. As such, they are not print quality.

Identifying Photos:

For a composite: Tell us the name of the person (as we have it listed) and note that you want a composite photo.

For all other photos: Tell us the Page and Image Number of the photo. The image number can be found at the bottom left corner of the full sized image. (Example: Races - 1970-1979 - Image 23)
